Awareness Campaign on Violence Prevention in IDP Communities

The Voice of Somaliland Minority Women Organization (VOSOMWO), in collaboration with Plan International, jointly conducted an awareness-raising campaign on violence prevention in two Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) settlements in Hargeisa, namely Daami and Sheikh Nur.

The overall objective of the campaign was to raise awareness among community members and local committees on the prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and other forms of violence affecting vulnerable groups, including women, children, and other at-risk individuals. The campaign aimed to strengthen community understanding of the causes, consequences, and prevention mechanisms of violence, as well as to promote a culture of protection and respect for human rights.

During the sessions, participants were sensitized on how to identify different forms of violence, report incidents safely, and support survivors in accessing appropriate services. Special emphasis was placed on the role of community structures and leaders in preventing violence and protecting vulnerable individuals.

In addition, community committees were encouraged to work closely with security forces and relevant service providers, including health, legal, and psychosocial support services, to ensure that survivors of violence can access timely and appropriate assistance.

The campaign also aimed to strengthen coordination between communities and service providers, improve referral pathways, and promote collective responsibility in addressing and preventing violence within IDP settings.
