Training on Monitoring and Documenting Human Rights Violations Launched in Hargeisa

A major training on monitoring and documenting human rights violations has officially commenced in Hargeisa. The training is organized by the Voice of Somaliland Minority Women Organization (VOSOMWO), in collaboration with Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and supported by the German Government.

The four-day training brings together participants from civil society organizations, government institutions, and international partners. Among the distinguished guests attending the opening ceremony were:

  • Director from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Mr. Maxaed Xashi

  • Head of the United Nations Office in Somaliland, Mr. Charles

  • WHH Representative, Mr. Khalid

  • Representative from the Ministry of Justice

  • Veteran journalist Mr. Mohamed Hassan Ali Waji

  • Along with other distinguished guests

Speakers at the event emphasized the importance of the training in strengthening awareness and protection of human rights, particularly for marginalized communities.

In her opening remarks, the Executive Director of VOSOMWO, Ms. Hibak Ahmed Hassan, highlighted the organization’s ongoing efforts to enhance the participation of marginalized communities in education, employment, and political processes. She noted that the training will focus on:

  • Proper methods of data collection and submission

  • Effective documentation of human rights violations

  • Understanding and monitoring human rights issues

Participants in the training have been drawn from the Togdheer, Saaxil, and Maroodijeex regions. They are expected to form a network of trained professionals capable of monitoring, documenting, and reporting human rights violations, and producing evidence-based reports that reflect the realities in their communities.

Veteran journalist Mr. Mohamed Hassan Ali Waji emphasized that women continue to face significant human rights challenges, noting that these issues are universal and not limited to specific communities. He also reflected on the historical struggles women have faced globally to secure their rights, including the right to vote.

Mr. Khalid, representing WHH, commended VOSOMWO for its dedication to social development and the protection of human rights. Similarly, the Director from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs underscored the importance of promoting and protecting human rights through such initiatives.

The Head of the United Nations Office in Somaliland, Mr. Charles, highlighted the significance of human rights as a global priority and encouraged continued dialogue and action. A representative from the Ministry of Justice also emphasized the role of legal frameworks in protecting and responding to human rights violations.

The training is expected to contribute to the establishment of skilled teams capable of effectively documenting and reporting human rights violations, thereby strengthening accountability, raising public awareness, and promoting justice.

This training workshop aims to strengthen the capacity of participants in monitoring, documenting, and reporting human rights violations. It forms a key component of the project “Advancing Minority Rights for Equal Access and Opportunities for Minority Communities in Somaliland,” implemented by VOSOMWO in collaboration with Welthungerhilfe (WHH ) and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
