VOSOMWO Holds Community Dialogue in Borama on Preventing FGM, Forced Marriage, and Gender-Based Violence
The Voice of Somaliland Minority Women Organization (VOSOMWO), with funding from Plan International, held a community dialogue in Borama, Awdal Region, bringing together young people, traditional elders, and religious leaders to discuss the prevention and response to harmful practices affecting women and girls.
The discussion focused on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), forced marriage, and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Participants explored the harmful consequences of these practices on the health, safety, rights, and dignity of women and girls.
The meeting provided an opportunity for community representatives to discuss practical solutions, strengthen their role in raising awareness, challenge harmful social norms, and promote community-led action to prevent abuse. It also highlighted the importance of supporting survivors, ensuring safe access to appropriate services, and strengthening referral pathways.
VOSOMWO calls on religious leaders, traditional elders, young people, families, and community members to work together to end FGM, prevent forced marriage, speak out against gender-based violence, and protect the rights of women and girls.
Ending harmful practices is everyone’s responsibility. Together, we can build communities where every girl and woman lives free from violence, discrimination, and abuse.
VOSOMWO appreciates Plan International’s support in advancing the protection and empowerment of women and girls.
